Batfarm will enable livestock farmers to assess the environmental impact of their farms

EuroDairy: a pan-European network for dairy farming

Neiker-Tecnalia studies the diseases of wildlife and possible transmission to domestic species

Trabajo en Campanas P3Report on diseases of wildlife and the risk of transmission to domestic species, as well as measures to prevent and treat them, has been the goal of the conference the Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development, Neiker-Tecnalia, held on October 20 at its headquarters Bizkaia Technology Park. The meeting was attended administrations technicians, animal recovery centers, associations and organizations related to the management of wildlife.

The informative session was framed within the Neiker-Tecnalia work done in the Program on Health Surveillance of wild species in the Basque Country, whose goal is to collect the most complete information regarding the prevalence and distribution in the environment pathologies special emphasis on animal and public health such as avian influenza and tuberculosis, among others. The implementation of monitoring plans is considered one of the best tools for the epidemiological study of some diseases, especially those that can be transmitted to humans and domestic species.

The result of this work the research center and agricultural development NEIKER, in collaboration with ELIKA and the three Provincial Councils have been published in a guide and a video entitled “Health surveillance of wild species. Guidelines for sampling in big game species “that will be distributed throughout the country and will also be available on the website of NEIKER. With this guide the research centre whats to detail what samples are required to perform the analysis for proper health surveillance and control of various diseases in wildlife, how to locate and collect them in the carcases and what is the optimal way to preserve them until dispatch the laboratory. The details of the sampling can be displayed on the video, which is taken as an example wild boar.

The main objective of the sanitary surveillance of wild species in the Basque Country is to determine the health of wildlife. To do this, they refer to the Neiker-Tecnalia laboratories animal carcasses collected in the wild or viscera of game species. The collection is carried out with the collaboration of the three Provincial Councils and other organs wildlife managers. The study of the bodies to determine the causes of death and, if the death is caused by a disease, appropriate measures are put in place to manage the control of it.

The test animals are wild boars, deer, roe deer, hare, different species of rodents and birds, as well as copies of carnivores such as badgers and foxes. The researchers analyzed the presence of diseases such as avian influenza, bovine tuberculosis, and hydatidosis Yersiniosis addition to bluetongue, distemper and mange, among others.
