‘Health cards’ to find out the condition of agricultural ecosystems

Portada TSEAwebIn order to provide farmers and anyone else involved in managing agricultural ecosystems with a tool enabling them to assess the impact of their farming practices on the health of their crops and soils, the Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development NEIKER-Tecnalia has created its new TSEAs or ‘Agricultural Ecosystem Health Cards’. These handbooks are an improved version of the cards created in the 1980s by the United States Department of Agriculture. The R&D centre is holding various meetings to make these handbooks known to various groups (growers, technicians, scientists and the administration) linked to the agricultural sector and who will receive them free of charge.

NEIKER identifies for the first time in Spain the presence of the Blue13 race, the fungus responsible for potato Mildew

daño tallo y hojaScientists from the Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development, Neiker-Tecnalia, Civil Society non-profit organization dependent  of Economic Development and Competitiveness Department of the Basque Government, have carried out the study of the genetic structure of Phytophthora infestans -that causes potato mildew – and have identified for the first time in Spain the existence of genotype Blue13 (13_A2). The identification was made by genotyping microsatellite markers (SSR). The finding is the fruit of the results of the doctoral thesis of agronomist Néstor Alor, presented at the University of Lleida and directed by Dr. José Ignacio Ruiz de Galarreta.

Two new potato varieties of great nutritional value and highly suitable for industrial processing

bodegonPotatoes, an essential food in human nutrition, have two new varieties produced by the Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development, NEIKER-Tecnalia, a not-for-profit Public Corporation that reports to the Department of Economic Development and Competitiveness of the Government of the Basque Autonomous Community (region). They are ‘Entzia’ and ‘Miren’, characterised by their great nutritional value and suitability for industrial processing.

What are the most effective methods to manage livestock waste?

IMG_0550In order to minimize atmospheric emissions of polluting gases, the Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development, NeikerTecnalia, Civil Society non-profit organization dependent on the Deputy Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Policy of the Basque Government. has conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of various treatments of livestock waste (slurry and manure). Research has shown that the application of manure in agricultural soils by the method of hanging tubes emit air only 3.9% of the applied ammonium, compared to 44% of the traditional method of range. Furthermore, storage of manure in waterproof bags reduces emissions of ammonia and methane by 86% and 61%, respectively. The results are part of the doctoral thesis defended recently by the agronomist Maialen Viguria. The study is part of the European project Batfarm, funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme of the EU and coordinated by NEIKERTecnalia.
