One of the major goals of the ALGAS project, funded by the Basque Government, is the selection of microalgal and cyanobacterial species and their adaptation to intensive culture under local climate conditions. Accordingly, the centre has a collection of algal species with high energy content (high lipid or sugar content) as well as a pilot plant for algal culture, harvesting and processing to get the final biomass.

Research conducted in the Basque Institute for Agricultural Development and Research, Neiker-Tecnalia, and led by the biologist Haritz Arriaga in collaboration with the Universitat Autònoma in Barcelona, has demonstrated that up to 35% of the accumulated nitrogen on dairy farms in the Basque Country can be reduced with a balanced diet in protein content without reducing milk production.

In order to innovate in this area, the NEIKER-Tecnalia technological centre is carrying out research on the influence of temporary cover crop and different irrigation regimes – for the typical flat and sloping soils of Rioja Alavesa region – on yield, vine vigour and grape and wine quality. The initial results when cover crops are planted show a reduction in the water availability of the vineyard, reflected in a reduction of yield and vigour, as well as in an improvement of the quality parameters of the must and wine. The results of the study can be used to help grapegrowers acquire a better understanding of their vineyards and adjust their management practices so as to obtain the highest possible quality.

Cankers are infections of the bark and the cambium, sunken necrotic lesions produced by the disintegration of the plant tissues as a result of the infection. In severe cases they cause the death of the branches and even of the tree crown and trunk distorsion. It is the first time that this desease is detected at the log in young and adult plantations of eucalyptus, because till now it had only be detectes at the leaves.
